Stuck in traffic? Here’s a ‘bigger’ way to deal with it
Traffic is something we have to live with. Now, there’s a way for the experience to be more worthwhile

MANILA, Philippines – Is there a way to make traffic in Metro Manila more bearable?

While a clear solution to traffic woes is far from sight, people have found various ways to cope: wake up at the crack of dawn, wait out the rush hour, or rent apartments closer to their place of work. None of these tactics, however, truly do much to lessen the 4 or so hours that the average motorist spends on the road.

Traffic is a waste of time, money, and energy. When there’s no option but to brave the “big parking lots” during rush hour, smartphones have become the ultimate lifesaver – showing the fastest route through Waze, connecting stranded passengers to drivers through Uber, or simply providing hours’ worth of entertainment through Facebook, Youtube, or iflix. Of course, all of that is dependent on whether you have enough data credits on your phone.

During the evening rush hour last July 4, Smart gave weary motorists a surprise to make being stuck traffic less stressful – the chance to experience big data for free.

Using geofencing technology, Smart sent Waze notifications and text messages to those traveling along EDSA and C5. Billboards also announced the surprise: Get 1GB worth of free mobile data, just for being stuck in traffic.
