Things only dad can get away with

MANILA, Philippines – Dads are usually easygoing and easy to understand, but sometimes, they do things that we just can’t fathom.

Like why do they pair open sandals with socks? Or why do they still wear cell phone holders on their belts? Only dads can get away with these things, and we can’t help but admire them for it.

Every dad has his own set of unique habits and traits. We don’t always admit it, but we do find these quirks endearing.

Here are some of our favorites:

Questionable “fashion”

Though some dads like to experiment with their clothes and have their style down pat, other dads default to a “classic” look: tucked-in shirts, loose jeans, and sneakers. They may not win any Best Dressed awards, but they win the Best Dad award in our hearts.

Little obsessions

Does your father fawn over his car like it’s one of his children? When he obsesses over his new gadgets or wheels, we sometimes feel left out. But at the same time, we admire how keenly he pursues his passions. Dad inspires us to work hard for our rewards.

A collective mindset

Dad has a tendency to develop a tendency to hoard essentials. Perhaps he’s always conscious of saving up for a rainy day? Set him loose in HMR or Ace Hardware and he’s bound to end up at the cash register with a brimming cart. At first, we’d wonder why we’d need boxes of nails or multiple sets of heat-resistant gloves, but on the next house emergency, we’ll thank him silently for always foreseeing our needs.

The “Handyman”

Dad never backs down on any challenge: his to-fix list includes leaky faucets, flat tires, and even the choppy cable connection. If he believes he can handle it, he’ll refuse to call in professional help. No matter how busy he is, he’ll find time to help us out of any scrape, big or small.

Sunday morning jam

Every time we score a “100” at our office karaoke sessions, we’ve got our father to thank for our lyrical prowess. Growing up, our Sunday mornings weren’t complete without dad blasting Chicago or The Bee Gees on the radio, with him singing along to boot. If he’s in the mood, we’d get an impromptu music history lesson as well.

Standout stand-up

Every time we come across a listicle of dad memes, we think: those one-liners and puns are genuinely something our dad has said. Though we may groan or accuse him of being corny, deep down, we actually think his jokes are pretty good.

It’s the little things

Dad may not be fond of expensive gifts or grand gestures, but we always feel that he’s there for us through the little things. Over a round of drinks, we can open up to him about anything. He may not send long text messages or give a lot of mushy hugs, but he’s always ready with wise words of encouragement when we need it most.
