Do women continue to be pigeonholed for certain jobs? Check out this info graphic

MANILA, Philippines – Looking for a job? If you’re a woman, you may still face certain hurdles.

Although the International Labor Organization reported that more jobs have been created for Filipino women than men in 2013, the employment rate of women still stands at 46.7%, significantly lower than men at 72.9%.

Furthermore, women still faced certain disadvantages in terms of benefits, wages, and underemployment.

Hiring statistics also show that gender stereotyping might still exist in certain industries. Some employers feel that there are jobs which are better suited for women than for men, or vice versa, even though listed qualifications do not always indicate gender.

What are the top industries dominated by men? What about women? Check out the infographic below, based on 2014 data provided by employment portal Jobstreet.com.

Based on the figures, more men continue to be employed in industries requiring heavy equipment or manufacturing. Meanwhile, women still dominate jobs in the education, hospitality, and retail industries.

Aside from discrimination, women face other issues in the workplace such as unequal wages, harassment, and the additional burden of domestic work.

Sometimes, it’s a huge consideration to know what types of industries are welcome to accept a particular job applicant based on his or her gender. No matter what course you finished, what kinds of skills and talents you may have, or what capacity you could offer a particular company, sometimes an industry is not so accepting just because you are who you are.

However, the status quo should not stop you from getting into the industry you want.

Men and women have to work together to whip bias away from people.  – Rappler.com
