Why mothers deserve a ‘day off’

Krista Garcia
Motherhood is one tough job. How can you make it easier once in a while?

MANILA, Philippines – Would you ever accept a job with 24/7 working hours, no defined compensation, and no vacations?

You probably wouldn’t. But around the world, billions of women sign up for this job wholeheartedly and without complaint – when they become mothers.

It’s truly the “world’s toughest job,” as one viral ad puts it. Mothers are quiet heroes who put the needs of their families ahead of their own. Every day, they prepare our meals, make sure our clothes are clean and fresh, and keep our home beautiful.

Often, mothers even have to do all these things on top of their day jobs. That’s why they deserve nothing less than a huge “thank you” – or an actual day off.

It’s just too easy to take a mother’s sacrifice for granted. We get so used to mothers taking care of everything that we forget that they, too, deserve a nice break once in a while.

Less work, more love

Last August 28, thousands of moms enjoyed a “day off” courtesy of detergent brand Breeze. The event, dubbed “Breeze 1Laba Day,” was held simultaneously in barangays around Metro Manila, Pangasinan, Batangas, Cebu, and Davao.

While moms played fun games and received exciting surprises, Breeze’s “Laba Ladies” washed over 481,536 pieces of laundry with washing machines sponsored by Electrolux, LG, Whirlpool and White Westinghouse.

Breeze aims to empower mothers by removing tough stains with one wash. That way, mothers can spend less time worrying about stains, and more time for the important stuff, like creating memories with their children.

“With the one laba guarantee, I am assured that my family’s clothes are clean and fresh in just one wash and with less effort,” said Christine Bersola-Babao, one of the celebrity “Sige Moms” who attended the event in Barangay Commonwealth, Quezon City.

“All moms want the best for our kids and Breeze allows us to do that,” added Dimples Romana. “I’m not afraid to let my daughter run, bike and be active because I know it’s the best way for her to learn. And I don’t have to worry about the stains on her clothes.”
For Gladys Reyes, letting go of laundry worries makes her comfortable with letting her kids be kids. “We always have fun, learn and make memories together. Sometimes the messier the activity, the more fun it is!” she said.

Now you do it

Giving mom a “day off” doesn’t need to be such a grand production. Why not try doing these things for her:

  1. Give her a daily hug and thank you for being awesome
  2. Help her do the laundry
  3. Prepare her breakfast one weekend
  4. Post on your wall a collage of her pictures with a sweet message
  5. Treat her to a “spa” day

And a final note to mothers: it’s important to also think of yourself once in a while. Take a break and rest when you need to. Play with your kids and go on adventures with them. Years from now, you won’t be remembering the mud, paint, and dirt – but only the memories will remain.
