‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’: Movie poster contest
The entries have been submitted and voting has been closed. Find out who won the 'Dawn of the Planet of the Apes' alternative movie poster contest

MANILA, Philippines – Before the time of flashy trailers and the Internet, the only thing that compelled people to watch movies was contained in a hand-drawn movie poster.

Today, although endangered, the art of drawing up alternative movie posters to well known classics and summer blockbusters still lives on in the subcultures of artists, movie-lovers, and graphic artists alike.

Along with the release of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes – the sequel to the 2011 hit Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and remakes of the classic movie franchise – Rappler, in partnership with Warner Brothers, held an alternative movie poster competition.

We posted a callout to artists and movie lovers to send in their own version of the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes movie poster. The call for entries ran from June 27 to July 20.

The submitted entries were then uploaded as an album on Rappler’s official Facebook page. We crowdsourced votes on the best poster based on Facebook likes. One like equaled to one vote.

The voting phase closed last Sunday August 3 and after tallying the scores from Warner Brothers and Rappler, three winners have been selected and will be the recipients of limited edition Dawn of the Planet of the Apes merchandise.

The three winners are “From Evolution to Revolution” by Roberto Manicad, “New Road” by Teddy Pavon, and “Between a Rock and a Hard Place” by Daniel R. Dela Cruz.

Below is a slideshow that features the winning entries and all of the submissions.

Contest mechanics were:

  • All the submitted entries will be posted on a Facebook album in Rappler’s official Facebook page after the last date of submission.
  • Send in your entries to submit@rappler.com with the subject line: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Include in the body of your email the title of your artwork, your name, and contact details.
  • The posters will be judged based on 3 criteria:
    • 50% of the score will be crowd-sourced, based on the number of likes of the photo on the Facebook album
    • 25% will come from Rappler’s score
    • 25% will come from Warner Brothers

Congratulations to the winners and thank you to all of the participants. – Rappler.com
