Five things that our moms would love to hear more often
Sometimes, the smallest words can make the biggest difference

MANILA, Philippines – From the moment you enter this world, you form a bond with your mom that lasts for a lifetime. It’s a bond that only grows stronger and deeper over time. Moms provide us with the support we need to get us through life’s challenges and the love with which to celebrate its triumphs.

Unfortunately, as we grow older and busier, we sometimes forget just how important our mom is in our lives. Beyond the usual “thank you” and “I love you”, there is more that we can say to show her just how much she means to us. She may not always say it, but she thinks about you and misses you when you’re not around.

Here are a few things that you can say to mom to make her feel extra special this Mother’s Day and beyond.

“Let’s go out for a coffee now.”

While you were too young to remember, your mom invested a lot of her time into looking after you and being with you. Make the effort to spend more time with her. Trips out of town or out of the country are great for bonding, but planning for trips like these are tricky and sometimes they don’t push through. Try asking her out for merienda or coffee on the spot. A spontaneous coffee date with mom shows that she’s on your mind and that you enjoy spending time with her.

“I’ll get it mom. You deserve a break.”

Being a mom starts from the moment her child is born and continues on as a lifetime responsibility. Your mom fed you when you were hungry, hugged you when you were scared and gave you a shoulder to cry on when you were sad. Most of the time she is the best person for these things, or she also feels obligated to do these things for you, but once in a while it’s okay to relieve her of her duty and take care of it yourself. Tell her she can take it easy for a night while you cook her dinner or help her out with her chores. It shows that you appreciate all the hard work that she has done for you.

“I need your advice.”

Your mom played a big part in all the important milestones in your life – birthdays, graduations, your wedding, holidays and everything in between. Together, you’ve shared a lifetime of treasured memories. When you faced some of life’s earliest challenges, mom was always there to provide an encouraging word and sometimes, simply believed in you. While you may be a responsible grown-up now, you’re never too old to ask for mom’s input. It can be something as simple as how to cook her winning seafood paella or asking for some career advice. Asking your mom for her opinion is a great way to learn, grow and to show her how much you still value her.

“How was your day?”

Moms love to hear their children’s stories; your latest adventure, your work troubles, your new friends, your new girlfriend. Still, we sometimes get so caught up in telling our stories that we forget to ask about her story. Simply asking your mom how her day went opens up a new conversation and makes her feel more appreciated.

“Thank you for being my biggest cheerleader.”

In everything you’ve done in your life, whether you went on to great success or failed miserably, your mom was in your corner cheering you on all the way. She taught you the true meaning of unconditional love by showering you in its wonderful graces. Letting her know how much you cherish her undying support can brighten up her day in unimaginable ways. It may not seem like much but it’s the smallest gestures that can sometimes mean the most.

While Mother’s Day only comes once a year, making your mom feel special is a year-round, lifelong endeavor. In this day and age of texting and social media, there is no sweeter music to your mom’s ears than the sound of your voice. So go ahead, pick up the phone, call your mom and tell her everything you want to say. – Rappler.com
