Women of substance and self-reliance
12 women share their stories of inspiration, of sacrifice and of survival

MANILA, Philippines – How do various types of women value their work in relation to how they value themselves? If a woman is in a non-high paying job or belongs to the informal sector, what dreams and aspirations do they have, given their life circumstances?

A woman braves the heat of the sun along the streets of Cubao selling candies and cigarettes while another stands for hours in Quiapo waiting for someone to buy her sampaguitas. Both are hoping to bring something home to their families.

When you ask them why they get up every morning to go to work, they will say it’s for their families and for their dreams of one day owning a home, sending all their children or grandchildren to school, and save up for a rainy day.

Sometimes they just have to earn enough to be able to feed their families at least 3 times a day. Most of these women may not have a college education and are raising their kids on their own, but they know that if they don’t work, they will not survive.

Regardless of their life’s circumstances, these women are strong, as they face each day with hopes that they will be able to put food on the table and take home money for her children’s allowance to school. They make sacrifices of giving up their dreams so their children will have a chance to build their own ambitions.

And sometimes, society judges women like them, just because they belong to social classes lower in stature. But they are women who remain strong despite the odds. They strive to work with dignity and purpose, despite the obstacles. Sure, their life circumstances vary from the usual standards of what’s comfortable, but this doesn’t mean that they’re not valid and contributing members of society.

Here are women who, despite hardships, share their stories of inspiration, of sacrifice, and of survival. – Rappler.com
