MANILA, Philippines – For its advocacy to improve the level of financial literacy among Filipinos, Sun Life Financial launched the SINAG 2015 Financial Literacy Journalism Awards. The initiatives seeks to encourage Filipinos to become more financially prepared and break free from debt and financial dependency.

Lalie Novero of Sun Life’s Public Relations and Communications department emphasized Sun Life’s aim to channel the ideals of financial literacy through the media.

“As a catalyst of change, we are mindful of the power of the media as an instrument that can help convey information in order for our citizens to acquire higher literacy in managing its financial resources,” Novero said.

She added: “Moreover, we believe that the media is the appropriate sector and partner in our society that can propagate Sun Life’s financial literacy advocacy.”

Who can join

The competition is open to Filipino print journalists from both broadsheets and tabloids nationwide. Writers may enter the contest themselves or may get nominated by their editors. 

The nominees must possess social responsibility and personal integrity, and must be recognized for his or her highly professional character. 

The requirements

A nominee must have written at least 3 articles that comply with the following objectives:

  • It promotes the importance of financial literacy 
  • It educates readers on the different financial products and services of Sun Life, and 
  • It shares stories that readers may draw inspiration from their own financial journey.

The articles should be original, written in English, bylined, and published between December 2014 and October 30, 2015.

Each nominee is allowed to submit a maximum of 5 articles and accompanied by an accomplished nomination form. The form will be provided by Sun Life and can be secured from its offices.

The entry must also be submitted with an accompanying curriculum vitae of the writer and with the articles in MS Word files each having a label containing the date that the story was published and the name of the publication. 

Each entry to the awards will be judged using the following criteria:

  • Relevance to the theme of financial literacy – 50 %
  • Overall impact (must be accurate, informative, educational and compelling)- 50%

Sun Life Financial is responsible of forming a panel of judges who possess competence on the subject and will come from both the private and public sectors.

The SINAG 2015 will only have one Grand Champion each from Mindanao, Visayas and Luzon, which includes the National Capital Region (NCR). The Grand Champion from each of the island group will receive a cash prize amounting to P35,000 and will be added by Sun Life’s Prosperity Fund starter fund worth P5,000 and a trophy. 

Interested writers and journalists need to mark November 6, 2015 in their respective calendars as the deadline for submission of entries. Entries to SINAG 2015 can be submitted to Sun Life’s PR and Communications department through the email of Lalie Novero (pnove@sunlife.com).
