Nazareno 2016: Road closures, traffic rerouting

MANILA, Philippines – The annual Feast of the Black Nazarene, one of the biggest religious events in the Philippines, will be held on Saturday, January 9.

The event draws millions of devotees every year, who join the procession of the 17th-century mulatto image of Jesus Christ from the Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo Church.

To prepare for the event, several roads along the route of the procession will be closed, and a traffic rerouting scheme will also be implemented starting Friday evening, January 8, until the day of the procession itself.

Road closures

Starting 9 pm on Friday, January 8 

• Katigbak Drive and South Drive (one lane accessible to Manila Hotel and H2O hotel)
• Northbound lane of Quezon and MacArthur Bridge from Quirino Shrine onwards
• Taft Avenue from Freedom Triangle to Bonifacio Shrine

Starting midnight on Saturday, January 9

• Stretch of MacArthur Bridge, Jones Bridge and Quezon Bridge
• Roxas Blvd from Katigbak Drive to TM Kalaw St
• Both lanes of Quezon Blvd (Quiapo) will be closed to traffic, from Andalucia/Fugoso St and España Ave/P. Campa St for southbound, and from Taft Avenue for northbound

The Manila District Traffic Enforcement Unit said some streets will be closed during the procession and will be reopened once the tail end of the procession has passed.

Traffic rerouting

Starting 9 pm on Friday, January 8 

Light vehicles passing through the stretch of Bonifacio Drive and southbound side of Roxas Blvd: Turn around to Anda Circle going to A. Soriano Ave, right to Gen. Luna St to Burgos-Orosa St, left to TM Kalaw St to Taft Avenue to destination.

Trucks and other heavy vehicles: Turn around to Anda Circle going back to northbound lane of Road 10 to C3 to destination.

Vehicles from the southern part of Manila passing through northbound side of Roxas Blvd from TM Kalaw St to P. Burgos St: Turn right to TM Kalaw St, left to Orosa St going to Intramuros, left to A. Soriano Avenue to destination.

Vehicles from P. Burgos St: Turn right to Finance Road to Ayala Avenue, to destination

Vehicles using northbound side of Taft Avenue: Turn right to Ayala Avenue, to destination.

 

Starting midnight on Saturday, January 9 

Vehicles coming from Quezon City using España Avenue: Turn right to P. Campa St, left to Andalucia St, right to Fugoso St, right to CM Recto Avenue to destination.

Vehicles coming from España Avenue heading to South Pier Zone: Turn left to Nicanor Reyes St, right to CM Recto Avenue or turn left to Mendiola St, to destination.

Vehicles coming from Legarda St: Turn right to CM Recto Avenue or turn left to Mendiola St, to destination.

Vehicles coming from Caloocan City using Rizal Avenue: Turn right to Fugoso St or CM Recto Avenue, to destination.

Heavy vehicles or cargo trucks: Take President Osmeña to President Quirino Avenue to Nagtahan via AH Lacson Avenue to Capulong St (and vice versa)
