Invitation to a workshop: Feature writing 101

MANILA, Philippines – Whether you are an aspiring writer or someone who finally has the time to pursue his passion late in life, you should always find time for higher learning. It’s never too late to learn a new skill, especially writing, which you can hone with regular practice.

Writer’s Block Philippines, an organization dedicated to empowering writers, communicators, and creative entrepreneurs, will have another run of its popular workshop “Feature Writing 101” on July 16 from 1 pm to 6 pm at Fully Booked Bonifacio Global City.

“It covers the basics of writing feature pieces fit for general themes. We’ll share our tried-and-tested tips on how to write effective feature articles that you would be proud to sign with your byline,” says Ana P. Santos, Writer’s Block co-founder and a journalist who focuses on women and gender issues. Santos is a regular columnist in Rappler and as the 2014 Persephone Miel Fellow for the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, her work has been published in The Atlantic and The Washington Post.  

“Aside from discussing the different kinds of feature stories, we’ll also talk about finding a story angle, and other related topics,” says Nikka Sarthou-Lainez, the other half of Writer’s Block and a lifestyle writer who contributes for various online and print publications. The duo both left their respective careers to pursue their passion to become full-time freelance writers and put up Writer’s Block Philippines in 2010. Since then, they have continued to organize writing workshops and other similar events.

Myrza Sison, editoral director of Cosmopolitan Philippines, will be the guest speaker at the workshop. Model-turned-fashion editor Sison started Cosmopolitan Philippines in 1997 and has launched other successful titles under Summit Publishing like the local edition of Marie Claire.
