MANILA, Philippines – Rappler and AMA University Online Education (AMA OEd) have joined forces to offer students a new avenue to learn about digital journalism.

Rappler will be releasing 2 online courses through AMA OEd, namely Basic Digital News Video Production and Social Media Communication. These courses will introduce students to the basics of digital journalism, from defining what it is and how it integrates into other disciplines.

“The goal is to enhance and create alternative learning facitilies for schools, barangays, government – not just in our country, but for the global community as well,” said Rupert Ambil II, the Executive Director for Rappler’s civic engagement arm, Move.PH. “The key message is to provide more opportunities to learn communications and journalism by using technology.”

The Basic Digital News Video Production course will teach students the technical, aesthetic, and substantive sides to video production for online platforms. It offers a comprehensive guide to the different tools and applications that can be used, as well as an overview of the habits and needs of the online news video audience. And of course, it teaches the value of responsible and credible journalism.

The Social Media Communication course will help familiarize students with the social media landscape, introducing them to the basics of understanding an Internet audience, platforms, and tools of a social media manager. It will teach students how to express ideas and emotions clearly and effectively as well as to identify different types of social media communication.

These courses will be under the baccalaureate programs of AMAOED or they can also be taken as short courses.

“This partnership is timely and something that the Filipino netizens need,” said Dr. Amable C. Aguiluz IX, Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman for AMA Education System (AMAES). “We are now at an age where information spreads quickly. With the partnership, both can collaborate to educate students about the contribution of mass media in the improvement of our society, particularly focusing on digital journalism.”

AMA University Online is the first school to offer full online education in the Philippines, and now, with this partnership with Rappler, students can now learn Digital Media Journalism.

“We are looking forward for future Rappler courses which will be hosted by AMA Online. As a leader at the forefront of delivering quality education through Internet technology, AMAOED is excited to promote knowledge which we think is relevant nowadays,” says Dr. Aguiluz IX.

The courses are now available on AMA Online University. – Rappler.com
