This is a press release from Youth for Climate Hope.
Youth for Climate Hope, a Bacolod-based environmental youth coalition, is gearing up to join the #FridaysForFuture second international call to strike for the climate with “Istorya Klima,” an interactive community event at 3 pm on Friday, May 24, at the Bacolod Public Plaza. “Environmental issues are not household conversations,” said Krishna Ariola, lead convenor of Y4CH and Youth Strike for Climate Philippines (YS4C).
“We need to mainstream the discussion on the climate catastrophe if we want to start turning the gears and spur our leaders towards drastic and immediate climate action,” she added.
The Philippines ranks 3rd among countries most vulnerable to climate change, and this glaring statistic has moved climate groups in the city to take the reins in demanding climate justice.
In line with this call, YS4C, a national network of young climate strike organizers, has proposed 6 national demands:
- Phase-out of coal and fossil fuels
- Just transition to 100% renewable energy by 2050
- Strengthening of the Indigenous Peoples Rights Act (RA 8371)
- Appropriate legislation and funding for climate research and development
- Strengthening Climate Change Adaptation-Disaster Risk Management (CCA-DRRM) policy
- Fast-tracking of the Sustainable Transportation Act 2017
For the local government, Y4CH is calling for a full implementation of the Plastic Bag Regulation Ordinance (CO 562) and the passage of a Renewable Energy & Coal-Free Ordinance for Negros Occidental.
The event aims to start these conversations in compelling and innovative ways, including through art, music, and storytelling centered on different facets of the environmental movement.
The venue will be divided into 3 stations: Kalibutan (world) for stories about the Earth; Kadagatan (sea) for artists and musicians who want to make waves of impact through art and music; and Kabukiran (countryside) for anyone who wishes to promote minimalist living through donations.
The attendees will also converge in a march and rally immediately after the programs in order to bring further attention to the cause.
Various youth-led groups will participate in the event, among them Linghod, Youth for Climate Hope, Youth Empowering Youth Initiative, Negrosanon Young Leaders Institute, Humanist Alliance for the Philippines-International, Jr, Dakila-Bacolod, Akbayan Youth-Bacolod, Youth for Sustainable Change, KAPAWA-Liceo, and many others. – Rappler.com
