MANILA, Philippines – SPARK! Philippines, in partnership with UN Women Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, is organizing the #Women2020 Summit: Women in the Next Decade, to be held on Thursday, March 5 at Samsung Hall, SM Aura Premier, Taguig, Metro Manila.

The #Women2020 Summit will feature panel discussions with inspiring women changemakers on gender equality and women’s empowerment. Powerful women speakers such as Maoi Arroyo of Ignite Impact Fund, Dr. Gia Sison of Youth for Mental Health Coalition, Meggie Ochoa of Fight to Protect, Miss International 2016, Kylie Verzosa, and many more will join the line-up.

The event, which is on its second year, is co-presented by Terre des Hommes Netherlands through the Girls Advocacy Alliance, Philippine Business Coalition for Women Empowerment (PBCWE), Austrian Embassy Manila, British Embassy Manila, French Embassy, Embassy of Sweden, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).

The one-day event will also include keynote speeches by women leaders in government such as Vice President Leni Robredo, Senator Grace Poe, and Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte.

Joining the summit as the new EU Gender Champion in the Philippines, Austrian Ambassador Bita Rasoulian said, “The conversations we begin at this summit will steer the gender equality activism towards a brighter, stronger future. Global gender parity remains unattained and progress still too slow for many women and girls around the world. What better time to join forces, grasp the opportunities, and take collective action towards a more equitable and prosperous future for all than at the start of a new decade.”

“Despite significant progress in women’s rights since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 25 years ago, women still work more hours, earn less, have fewer choices, are disproportionately underrepresented and risk violence. As we prepare for the next decade, let us work together to ensure that women and girls enjoy equal rights and opportunities. Generation Equality starts here!,” said Anna-Karin Jatfors, Deputy Regional Director of UN Women Asia and the Pacific.

SPARK! and UN Women aim to use this platform to spark conversations on the intersectional issues that women in the Philippines and Asia are facing. The summit hopes to highlight the need to identify and implement solutions to achieve gender equality, and increase drive and participation towards women’s empowerment in the new decade.

“Women and empowerment works like osmosis. You can be in the audience listening to a powerful speaker and it resonates and changes you to be better. This is what we want to achieve with this year’s #Women2020 Summit,” said SPARK! Executive Director, Maica Teves.

Ambassador Harald Fries of the Embassy of Sweden said, “We must address and act upon the challenges women face regarding rights, representation, and resources if we want to empower them in this decade, and the next. Let’s take on this challenge together.”

The #Women2020 Summit is organized in the context of International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on 8 March. This year’s theme, I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights is aligned with UN Women’s new multigenerational campaign, Generation Equality, which marks the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

Adopted in 1995 at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, China, the Beijing Platform for Action is recognized as the most progressive roadmap for the empowerment of women and girls, everywhere.

The #Women2020 Summit is made possible through the venue partnership of Samsung Hall and SM Aura Premier, and the support of numerous sponsors and partners. Join the summit by getting your free tickets through this link: women2020summit.eventbrite.com. – Rappler.com
