MANILA, Philippines – Rappler chief executive officer and executive editor Maria Ressa was cited as “New Media Entrepreneur of the Year” at the Gawad Silangan 2014 awards of the University of the East on Friday, March 7.

Ressa was among the media practitioners honored with the Gawad Lualhati Awards for News and Current Affairs, a category reserved for outstanding media practitioners “who have used their talent to inspire, their career to bring positive influence, and their special place in the society to initiate positive reforms in our community.”

“These outstanding men and women have proven track records of ethical and credible reporting in the field of news and public affairs,” UE said in its program.

It added that the awardees “embodied the core values of the University of the East which are excellence, integrity, professionalism, teamwork, commitment, transparency, accountability, and social responsibility.”
