MANILA, Philippines – Joining efforts to promote clean water preservation and accessibility, Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) along with government partners, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS), are leading the country’s celebration of World Water Day (WWD) 2014 .

With the theme “Water is Power,” this year’s World Water Week emphasizes the relationship between water and energy in the context of sustainable development.

“We want to help in the campaign to help raise awareness in the realm of water and power. It is our hope that this would lead to sustainable and productive action to improve the country’s water and energy efficiency drives,” Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas said.

The 3 lead agencies were joined by 18 other public and private organizations who visited the Maynilad’s La Mesa Treatment Plant 2 on Monday, March 17, as part of the Water & Energy Nexus Tour. The event is part of the kick-off activity for the Philippines’ celebration of the World Water Week from March 17 to 22, 2014.

Other events that Maynilad lined up for the week include mangrove planting activities, a water education drive, and a water and energy forum. The company is also mounting the culminating activity on Friday, March 21, at the SM Mall of Asia.

WWD partners include Meralco, Philex, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene(WASH) Cluster, Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA), Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA), National Water Resources Board (NWRB), Pasig River Rehabilitation Committee (PRRC), MWCI, SM Mall of Asia, SM Cares, National Irrigation Administration (NIA), Department of Education (DepEd), National Power Corporation (NPC), Department of Energy (DOE), the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and Rappler.
