PH Red Cross celebrates 67 years of volunteerism
The Philippine institutions lauds its volunteers and supporters who selflessly volunteered after Typhoon Yolanda devastated the country

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Red Cross (PRC), one of the country’s premier humanitarian organizations, turned 67 on Tuesday, April 15.

As part of its celebration, PRC lauded those who selflessly volunteered during Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan).

“On the 67th anniversary of the Philippine Red Cross, we recognize the contributions of these courageous and compassionate men and women. They work not only in the Yolanda-stricken areas, but everywhere in the country. They are the frontliners of the Philippine Red Cross,” PRC Chairman and CEO Richard Gordon said.

Disaster Management is just on the 6 major services PRC provides:

  • Blood Services
  • Safety Services
  • Community Health and Nursing Services
  • Social Services
  • Volunteer Services

Since 1947, PRC has been protecting the “life and dignity” of Filipinos, especially the poor and vulnerable.

PRC volunteers throughout the years are composed of both professionally trained health workers, as well as ordinary citizens; the two have a common goal – to share their time and resources with the poorest of the poor.

Yolanda response

PRC has distributed thousands of emergency food items, blankets, mosquito nets, plastic mats, jerry cans, kitchen sets, hygiene kits, water, and hot meals.

It has also helped in rebuilding homes and classrooms for families devastated by Yolanda.

As additional support, PRC also provided cash grant to 58, 091 families; each receiving around P2,000- P5,000.00.

“Even before disaster strikes, our Red Cross 143 volunteers have been at the forefront, engaging the community, and leaving them better than when they first came,” Gordon explained.

“It is our volunteers on the ground who have made a great difference in the lives of those affected by typhoon Yolanda. They have been involved in every facet of our operations in the areas affected by the storm. It is only fitting that we pay tribute to them,” he added.

PRC Secretary General Gwendolyn Pang stressed that their efforts in Yolanda-affected areas have now shifted from emergency to recovery. “There is still much to be done. But we are committed to staying in these areas until the survivors of typhoon Yolanda can get back on their feet again,” Pang said.

PRC plans to build 100,000 more homes.

Pang also reminded the public not to forget about the disasters which also shook Bohol and the armed conflict in Zamboanga. – Rappler.com
