Free prostate cancer check at DOH hospitals on June 14

MANILA, Philippines – In celebration of Father’s Day, more than 60 Department of Health (DOH) and private hospitals will offer on Saturday, June 14, a free digital rectal examination (DRE) for males aged 40 years and above.

DRE is one of the main screening procedures in assessing the prostate which aids in detecting prostate cancer in its early stage.

Prostate cancer is recorded as the 4th most common cancer among males, according to DOH. (READ: Treatment extends life for men with prostate cancer)

Based on the 2010 Cancer Facts and Figures, about 2,712 new cases are diagnosed yearly with an estimated 1,410 deaths as incidence rates start increasing sharply at age 55.

The National PaDRE and Men’s Health Day program began in 1996 as a project of DOH and the Philippine Urological Association (PUA).

“If you love your dad, bring him on June 14 to any participating hospital/clinic for a free DRE,” Health Secretary Enrique Ona said in a statement Wednesday, June 11.

About 64 DRE centers will participate this year. On Saturday, the out-patient departments of the different hospitals will be open from 8 am to 4 pm to conduct the screening.

Patients who will need additional laboratory exams, such as prostate specific antigen, prostate ultrasound, and biopsies will be given requests for the examinations, Ona explained.

If not available in the participating hospital, patients will be referred to a diagnostic laboratory where they can get tested at discounted rates. Results of treatment will be recorded and reported to the PUA.
