UP Junior Marketing Association to hold Major Marketing Event
Registration fee is set at P500, deadline is on August 23.

This is an announcement from the UP Junior Marketing Association.

Once again, the UP Junior Marketing Association (UP JMA) brings you, the Major Marketing Event (MME). This year, they’re reinventing the competition, pulling out all the stops, calling whom they can to speak, working harder to pool a larger cash prize—all to offer college students around the metro a better platform to express themselves.

A diverse path

Back in 2008, UP JMA decided it wanted to further embody its thrusts in the field of academics and socials. Living true to its name, the state-university-based organization resolved to accomplish its goal through an Integrated Marketing Communications competition centered around an advocacy, promoting social responsibility while allowing brilliant minds across the metro to showcase their skills.

Its maiden voyage was a partnership with the Department of Tourism to help promote Philippine tourism through wellness and health, followed by stints with NAMFREL and the MMDA to encourage informed voting and road responsibility.

Aside from these, their past competitions have dealt with disaster awareness, Philippine sports and the indie music scene. Each competition turned out to be larger than the last, with the previous one attracting around 100 teams, each with three to five members. With modifications to the structure and a widening area of reach, the each team has worked hard to bring the Major Marketing Event to where it is now. The prize pool, too, has been steadily increasing. From a Php 20,000 grand prize in 2008, it has grown to an astounding Php 100,000—a remarkable feat considering the organization is non-profit and everything is raised from ground up.

Creating a ripple

Every year, the organization engages issues that encompass more than advocacies themselves.

With the will to contribute to the Philippine society in their own way, through a means they take pride in, the UP Junior Marketing Association has made it their goal to hold the competition yearly. It helps, according to their members, that it involves two of the things they love: marketing and their country.

They believe that the competition is one way to help others develop holistically. Going beyond the skills to market, present, and make connections, the MME team hopes that through the participants’ research, they learn more about the present situation of the country and propose ways by which to improve it.

“It’s one thing to market a product or a service with an idea or message behind it,” Miguel Cuevas, co-chairperson of this year’s MME team says, “but it’s another to tackle a societal issue creatively, with the interest of the nation at its very core.”

His partner, Karina Dimayuga, agrees. “We want them to understand what’s going on and to think of ways in which they can help. And once they do, hopefully, their ideas come into fruition. At the very least, we want to spread the interest and the information, the ideas to other people.”

Because the road to progress starts from there—from doing what you can in hopes of inspiring the same from others. The team, most especially, understands it’s a team effort. They’re doing their best to make sure everything’s going according to plan.

It’s been a busy summer for the team. In return, they only ask that the Filipino youth try. Because it’s time for their ideas to come together—because change is waiting.
