MANILA, Philippines – “What is essential is invisible to the eye.”
Can you recognize where this quote came from? If yes, then you’re one of millions whose hearts have been touched by The Little Prince.
In 1943, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry published a novella about a pilot and his strange adventures with a small boy claiming to be a prince of his own planet. Since then, The Little Prince has become a well-loved classic, translated to over 250 languages with numerous adaptations in stage and film.
This month, a Filipino rendition written especially for children will hit the stage. Noted playwright Joaquin Cerdas has crafted his own playful and inventive version of “Ang Prinsipito,” full of quirks and true to the Filipino spirit.
Ang Prinsipito takes us to the Sahara Desert and introduces us to a forlorn pilot who has crashed in the middle of nowhere with no hope of rescue. In this dismal state, he meets a lone Prince who can smile, laugh, and love even when there is no hope. In his advanced age, the pilot has become too cynical – too adult – and he has forgotten what it was like to be a child. The Prince arrives just in time to remind him of this. The two strike a friendship and together they learn how to make the stars sing.
Ang Prinsipito will run from August 15-17, 22-24, and 29-31 at DITO: Bahay ng Sining in Marikina City. Musical scoring is by JP Del Mundo from the band, Never The Strangers. Direction is by Jay Crisostomo IV of Ikarus and production design is by Claudine Delfin of Pushpin Visual Solutions. The play stars Rolando Inocencio and Andrew Cruz as Piloto, Moreen Guese and Jewel Yu as Prinsipito, Duane Ligot as Soro, and Meyanne Plamenio as Rosas.
