MANILA, Philippines – The launch later this year of a new top-level global Internet domain just for non-governmental organizations means that civil society, charities, environmentalists, human rights groups and others will have an enhanced ability to become more visible on the Web. The organization that will administer .NGO, Public Interest Registry (PIR), will be in Manila for an event on Tuesday, August 19. Public Interest Registry, which already administers the well-known .ORG top-level domain, believes .NGO, which will be open only to certified NGOs, will provide a valuable service to the NGO community.
“The Internet is already a powerful tool for NGOs, allowing them to interact with the world and to connect with and secure new supporters and potential donors,” says PIR board member Ingrid Srinath. “We are now talking to the NGO community in many countries to better understand their needs and to explain the new domain.”
At Tuesday’s event, Srinath will be joined by PIR’s international advisor, Nick Thorne, the former United Kingdom ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva. Srinath is CEO of Hivos India Advisory Services, an international development organization and she works with civil society organizations in developing countries worldwide.
They will discuss the new top-level domain, the changing structure of the Internet and how Filipino NGOs can qualify for inclusion in the new domain. For Public Interest Registry, which is based in the United States, the Philippines is one of two top priority countries in Asia for .NGO.
