The run is an awareness campaign on the corruption issue to encourage citizen participation in good governance

MANILA, Philippines – At least 3000 people are expected to run against corruption on Sunday, October 19, at the CCP Complex, Pasay City for the annual Freedom Run.

“We have had a lot of runs in our city, but the Freedom Run is special to us because of its advocacy,” said Pasay City Mayor Antonino Calixto.

“Our local government envisions a city thriving with business and economic opportunities, but we cannot gain the trust of investors if we don’t have honest leaders,” he added.

Now on its 4th year, the Freedom Run with the theme, “I am free from corruption,” had over 13,000 participants, and was organized in different parts of the Philippines. Dingdong Dantes, Noel Cabangon, Rep Leni Robredo, and Sen Bam Aquino are endorsers of the Freedom Run.

“We also want our people to share in the responsibility of achieving the city’s objectives. The Freedom Run inches us to that goal,” added Calixto.

“It raises awareness on the issue of corruption, and encourages citizen participation in governance,” he stressed.

The Freedom Run was also held in Palo, Leyte in April 2013 and May 2014, 6 months after Super Typhoon Yolanda. Palo was one of the hardest hit towns of the storm, and the Freedom Run became a symbol of resilience and enduring hope for the people.

This year’s 3K and 10K run will commence and end at CCP Complex and will pass through the Mall of Asia grounds. Gun start for the 3K and 10K race is at 5:30 am and 5:45 am, respectively.

Registration will start on 5 September at the following sites: Pasay City Hall, Toby’s Sports (Mall of Asia), Runnr (Bonifacio High Street), Brooks (SM North Edsa), and FNF Office in Chino Roces, Makati City. Registration is also available online at www.freedomrun.ph. Fees are P450 for 3K and P550 for 10K.

The Freedom Run will be followed by a Freedom Concert. The runners will be greeted by the performances of the top 10 finalists of the Freedom Song writing composition at the finish line. Renowned music artist Noel Cabangon heads the jury that will select the best song that reflects good governance and freedom.

The Pasay City local government, Pasay Youth Development Council, and the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF), a German political foundation are co-organizing the event. Sport gear Brooks is sponsoring the event prizes.

The Freedom Run and the Freedom Concert are the closing activities of Freedom Week Asia, a week-long celebration of freedom and democracy in South East and East Asian countries. FNF project offices in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam are organizing activities on October 13-19, to promote freedom and democracy.

“In our survey, 94% of the participants join the Freedom Run because they want to be involved in the anti-corruption advocacy. 51% have become more active stakeholders after the run because they get to feel that they are part of a bigger campaign against corruption,” shared FNF Country Director Jules Maaten.  Rappler.com
