MANILA, Philippines – Are Filipino businesses ready for an integrated ASEAN? As businesses join the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) next year, Asia Society Philippines is convening its second dialogue “Business of ASEAN” for its Understanding ASEAN series on October 21, 2014, 3:00-5:00PM, at the Asian Institute of Management, to discuss the prospects and challenges of the ASEAN integration on small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs).

According to the Department of Trade and Industry, small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) account for 96% of enterprises in ASEAN and are the backbone of the Philippine economy, with more than 50% of domestic employment a result of SMEs. However, several businesses leaders say many Philippine industries are far from being ready. 

The focus of the Business of ASEAN dialogue will be on how SME’s can prepare best for the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015 and beyond. The notable entrepreneur speakers will discuss the opportunities and challenges of the AEC and discuss various topics, including the ASEAN psyche, customer intimacy, seamless operations, human resources and regional competitiveness.

Guest speakers include international marketing expert and consultant Dr. Eduardo Roberto, VMV Hypoallergenics CEO Laura Verallo de Bertotto, Sterling Paper and SL Agritech Corporation CEO and Chairman Henry Lim Bon Liong, Department of Trade and Industry Undersecreatary Zenaida Cuison-Maglaya, among others.

 


Young entrepreneurs, small business owners, local government units, business chambers and associations, embassies, academe and Asia Society members are expected to attend.

The first dialogue “ASEAN Identity” held last August 14 launched the Understanding ASEAN series, and speakers discussed the definition and relevance of ASEAN today. The succeeding dialogues on Disaster Management and Education will be held in December 2014 and February 2015, respectively.


Understanding ASEAN is a four-part series organized by Asia Society Philippines that aims to explore the opportunities and challenges through a multi-dimensional series of programs. The program series is supported by the Asian Institute of Management ASEAN 2015 Project and Go Negosyo.
