Philippines observes National Week for Overcoming Poverty
'Let us end discriminating those who have less and ensure that no one is left behind in our efforts to build a more equitable world,' says an official of the National Anti-Poverty Commission

This is a public service announcement from the National Anti-Poverty Commission:

MANILA, Philippines – “Napakarami nang tumutulong na labanan ang kahirapan,” Secretary Joel Rocamora of the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC) said.  (There are many helping fight poverty.)

“The government is doing something. For the first time, there is a 3% decline in poverty,” Rocamora added on Friday, October 17, to observe the start of the National Week for Overcoming Extreme Poverty (NWOEP).

The NAPC leads the observance of the NWOEP and United Nations’ International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with the theme “Leave no one behind: Think, decide, and act against extreme poverty.”

The event held in Rizal Park was in partnership with the international non-governmental organization All Together in Dignity (ATD) 4th World Movement.

(People living in poverty know that it is only through collaborative movement that we can raise our country and community towards bettering the world.)

ATD partner communities, representatives from national and local government agencies, and religious communities attended the event, which highlighted the sentiments and life experiences of the poor sectors.

Ang piso-pisong impok ay isang malaking bagay. Ang kahirapan po ay hindi hadlang basta magkakaisa tayo,” shared Alicia Voces, one of the community representatives from EnFaNCE Foundation, Inc. (Every peso saved is a big thing. Poverty is not a hindrance to our unity.)

Ad interim UN Resident Coordinator and UNICEF Country Representative Lotta Sylwander delivered the statement of UN General Ban Ki Moon on the event.

“2.4 billion people live on less than $2 a day. As we prepare for the post-2015 MDG, we must not lose sight of our commitment to eliminate all forms of poverty,” said Sylwander. “UN is committed in making poverty a history in the Philippines.”

In the Philippines, some of the poverty reduction programs that continuously make an impact include the Pantawid Pamilya Pilipino Program, the nationwide PhilHealth coverage, and the Grassroots Participatory Budgeting Program.

“What we need is to have a sustained economic growth to really make a dent in poverty,” asserted Secretary Rocamora.

He added: “Let us end discriminating those who have less and ensure that no one is left behind in our efforts to build a more equitable world. Let us also ensure that those who live in extreme poverty are enabled to uplift themselves – to actively participate in development.”  Rappler.com
