TACLOBAN, Philippines – On Wednesday, November 5, Youth for a United World-Tacloban (Y4UW-Tacloban) is organizing a 3-day music workshop dubbed “Musical Surge; paghinumdum, pasalamat, pagla-um (remembrance, thanksgiving, hope).” This free 3-day event will accept 100 choir members from the Visayas region.
One year after Haiyan’s surge of destruction, many are still deep in the process of rebuilding their homes and their lives. By hosting “Musical Surge,” Y4UW aims to facilitate healing and meaningful commemoration through the power of music. Choirs and their members can enhance their skills, build a stronger network, and use their craft as a means to thrive.
Members of the world-renowned Philippine Madrigal Singers will fly in to facilitate the workshop. Choirmaster Mark Anthony Carpio will be joined by Madz alumnae Luningning Aballe San Jose and Mary Jean Egloso to conduct trainings and deliver talks. Orna Joyce, a visiting Irish professional opera singer, will also be present.
The workshop will culminate on Saturday, November 7 with a vigil concert at the San Joaquin Parish in Palo, one of the areas heavily affected by Haiyan.
“Musical Surge” is also organized in partnership with the University of the Philippines-Tacloban. Y4UW-Tacloban is currently calling for donations through their official campaign platform at http://www.gofundme.com/musicalsurge. Excess resources will be used for Start Again’s Noche Buena Project in time for the Christmas Season.
