14th Young Economists’ Convention (YEC) Series provides a stimulating venue for young economists to enrich their economic understanding and leadership potential, grooming them to be socially responsible

This is a press release from the De La Salle University Economics Organization:

MANILA, Philippines —This year, the De La Salle University Economics Organization shall hold the 14th Young Economists’ Convention (YEC) series with the year-long theme “Transforming into a Modern ASEAN Economy.”

The YEC is a premier institution that provides a stimulating venue for young economists to enrich their economic understanding and leadership potential, and grooms them to be holistic and socially responsible.

It moves with the purpose of promoting awareness regarding prevalent economic issues, and instills vital critical thinking in the youth. It also pursues a legacy of continuous improvement in economic research for policy development.

The YEC encourages individuals to make a positive impact on society through synergies within and among students and institutions across the Philippines and Southeast Asia.

13 Years of Excellence

The YEC was established in 2001 through the collective effort of the DLSU Angelo King Institute for Economics and Business Studies (DLSU – AKI), the Anthony Aguirre Memorial Foundation, USAid and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, in cooperation with the Junior Philippine Economic Society (JPES) and the De La Salle University – Economics Organization (DLSU – EconOrg).

For the past years, the YEC has reached thousands of young economists with more than 20 participating universities and 5 international participant countries. It has gained accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and has been awarded as the Outstanding Youth Involvement Project by the Voice of the Youth.

Francisco Dakila (Director, Center for Monetary and Financial Policy, Banko Sentral ng Pilipinas), Andrew Alcid (Director, Philippine Realty Holdings Corporation), Rosalinda Baldoz (Secretary, Department of Labor and Employment), and Regina Lopez (Director, Board of Trustees, ABS-CBN Foundation Inc.) are some of the prominent speakers who have participated in the previous conventions.

This year, the 14th YEC will host 3 regional conventions (Luzon, Visayas, and National Capital Region), 1 ASEAN convention (Malaysia), and the 8th International Conference.

The YEC has partnered with prestigious universities in each region, namely, University of the Philippines – Los Banos (Luzon), Siliman University (Visayas), Ateneo de Manila University and University of the Philippines – Diliman (NCR), and for the ASEAN convention, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu.

Moreover, two events will be introduced to help in developing economics as a science in the Philippines, and in continuing the pursuit of the mission of producing well-rounded young economists: the Policy Making Competition (PMC) and the Young Economists’ Learning and Lecture Series: Technical Workshop (YELLS: TW). The PMC aims to help students to create sound policies that have economic intuition and realistic objectives geared at improving the state of the nation. On the other hand, YELLS:TW provides students with a crash-course through the basic necessities of making outstanding economic papers.

Aside from these additions, the YEC will also introduce the YEC Blog, an online journal of different entries pertaining to the different aspects that economics lays its hand on.

Also, the YEC will continue to hold its yearly Outstanding Research Paper (ORP) competition, which pits papers from all over the country against one another to see which one can be distinguished as the best among the best.

Everyone is invited to attend the 14th YEC, with the year-long convention series promising to be an engaging, exciting, and fruitful event. — Rappler.com
