Natashya Gutierrez will investigate the effectiveness of the ASEAN Committee on the Protection of Women and Children in promoting women's rights in the region

MANILA, Philippines – Multimedia reporter Natashya Gutierrez, who covers politics and Malacañang for Rappler, has been awarded a fellowship under the Reporting ASEAN: 2015 and Beyond program.

The fellowship is awarded to professional journalists who are nationals of any of the 10 ASEAN member countries, to encourage them to explore news issues related to the ASEAN community and ASEAN regionalization.

Gutierrez will also get a scholarship to attend a media congress in Bangkok, Thailand, in March 2015, “Reporting ASEAN: A Media Forum,” where she will present her findings.

Gutierrez will use the fellowship to investigate the role and effectiveness of the ASEAN Committee on the Protection of Women and Children (ACWC) in promoting women’s rights in the region.

The 3-month project, from December to February, includes travel within the region.

The fellowship is sponsored by IPS Asia-Pacific and Probe Media Foundation Incorporated, two Asia-based organizations focused on media and capacity building for journalists. Financial support is provided by the Rockefeller Foundation.

The program aims to encourage better reportage on the role of ASEAN and the ASEAN Community in the development of member countries. – Rappler.com
