LA UNION, Philippines – The second day of the Coast Thru Life Single & Unattached Invitational Classic Single Fin Longboard Contest and Beach Fest presented by Vans on Friday, February 20 at Mona Liza Point in La Union saw the semifinalists of the Men’s Open Division battling it out at first light for their spot in the final.
The swell had not diminished overnight as anticipated, so the competitors had the best conditions of the event in which to prove their mastery of traditional longboard surfing known as “logging” in perfect conditions.
Perhaps it was last night’s chat session with ASC Head Judge Steven “Monty” Montell at the San Juan Surf Resort, where he gave a bit of history as well as tips and guidance on traditional surfing and surfboards, that pushed the competitors performances up to red levels, but whatever the case it was certainly obvious that this crew has what it takes to impress not only the assembled crowd on the beach but also the international longboard community.
With such great conditions, the finals of all divisions were run this morning, but the winners won’t be announced until tomorrow night at the awards presentation in conjunction with the Beach Fest party.
Full press and details to follow in the final release.
Men’s Finalists: Ian Saguan, Moro Gandawali, Benito Narida, and Jay-R Esquivel.
