Rappler’s Charles Salazar launches 1st exhibit, ‘Portals’
'Portals' – a solo art exhibit inspired by hours wasted on the road – runs from March 7 to April 24 in Escolta, Manila

MANILA, Philippines – Charles Aaron Salazar wastes too much time on the road.

His daily commute involves a lot of walking – not to mention a number of transfers from tricycles to jeepneys and buses. Unfortunately he doesn’t know how to drive and, like most urbanites, acquiring a vehicle is unlikely. Because of this, almost half his day is spent along the streets of the city.

He therefore surmised that a portal – where you enter as one thing, and come out as another – would be truly useful.

This inspired Rappler’s Salazar to hold his first solo exhibit, “Portals,” from March 7 to April 24 in Escolta, Manila.

Portals, he says, make him think of horse-drawn carriages that used to roam the streets of Escolta as the main mode of public transportation. He uses the image of a horse crossing the portal as a metaphorical take-off point to make old streets come to life. Using his innate wit and humor, Salazar gives viewers another gateway.

Born in 1991, Salazar is a photographer from Cabuyao, Laguna, and now based in Manila. He works at Rappler as a video production and operations specialist. For his photographic works, he mainly uses film and mobile phones while playing with collages, cut-outs, and appropriation. He belongs to the collective “Tito and Tita” that works mainly with film and photography. His works involves a lot of humor as part of his creative process.

Salazar is holding his artist reception at 5 pm on Saturday, March 14.

His exhibit is held at PAN/// 98B COLLABORATORY, Ground Floor, Panpisco Building, 246 Escolta Street, Manila. – Rappler.com

PAN/// is a project space initiated by 98B COLLABORATORY and Panpisco Sales Inc using the old store front of the company along Escolta Street. It is a platform for exhibitions and projects of young and experimental artists and creatives from the Philippines and abroad.
