The new children's book by Paolo Bitanga and Winnie Wong puts the spotlight on social anxiety

MANILA, Philippines – On May 9, 2015, 2pm, The Blue Leaf Events Pavilion will play host to the launch of Jamie’s Best Friend, a new children’s book by New York-based Filipino author, Paolo Bitanga and Manila-based illustrator, Winnie Wong.

The story follows Jamie, a distressed young boy who had to say goodbye to his imaginary best friend, Rocco. In order to find a new playmate, Jamie musters up the courage to meet and interview a colorful array of imaginary creatures.

The book caters to pre-schoolers and children who might be experiencing social anxiety. It aims to teach people young and old about being open to meeting new people of all shapes and sizes, while being grateful for those who are already a part of their lives.

“As a filmmaker this is my first foray into the publishing industry, and it could not have been possible without my creative partner and star illustrator, Winnie Wong,” Bitanga said. “We have spent the past two years developing the book and are finally bringing it out into the world. Winnie and I have decided to self-publish our work, initially launching in Manila to sell domestically. By the end of 2015, we intend to sell it in the US and internationally through online platforms.”

The launch in The Blue Leaf Events Pavilion will feature a unique set-up inspired by the book. The space will be designed in the manner of “Jamie’s house,” where it will be partitioned into several “rooms” that each hosts a unique activity for young readers. The rooms will include Jamie’s room, a kitchen, living room, and a hallway.

Aside from these main areas, the event will contain several spots that make up a treasure hunt. This will be the main activity for the guests, and will reward them with prizes at the end. The treasure hunt will consist of items that stem from the world of the book. Each item is discovered at the end of a mini-game.

Jamie’s Best Friend will be available at select retailers nationwide.
