Pinays Rising opens third round of scholarships
PRESS RELEASE: The awards are open to all self-identified Pinays/xes and residents of the US mainland, Guam, and Hawaii

This is a press release from Pinays Rising Scholarship

The Pinays Rising Scholarship was founded in 2018 to promote the continuation of higher education while excelling in the areas of arts such as visual, performance/music, conceptual arts, as well as community service and activism.

The program was created by rapper and scientist Ruby Ibarra, and San Francisco State professor Dr. Allyson Tintiangco-Cubales, founder of Pin@y Educational Partnerships (PEP).

In 2020, the Pinays Rising scholarship attracted 115 self-identified Pinays/xes applicants across the United States who would be attending an institution of higher learning, full time, in the Fall 2020 semester. The program raised over $16,000 in donations in just a few weeks.

Pinays Rising will be offering awards for the following:

  1. Pinays Rising scholarships for Pinay/x scholar-activists who are pursuing higher education in the 2021-2022 school year.  All majors welcome.
  2. Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon scholarships for Pinay/x activist-historians who are pursuing higher education in the 2021-2022 school year.  This award is specifically for students who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the field of history.

According to Tintiangco-Cubales, while they have provided scholarships to scholar activists from a wide range of fields – including education, science, art, law, public health, social work, and medicine – they haven’t awarded any scholarship for Pinays/xes majoring in history.

“Our community needs more Pinay/x historians!  We are excited to announce that in honor Dr. Dawn Mabalon, we are setting aside a few special scholarships for applicants who are majoring in history, especially Pinay/xes who are documenting the stories of our community,” Tintiangco-Cubales added.

Applicants can only apply for one award. The awards are open to all self-identified Pinays/xes and residents of the US mainland, Guam, and Hawaii. The deadline is on July 1, 2021.

Scholarship recipients can use the funds from the Pinay Scholarship for personal development which can include supplies, self-care, or mental health activities, and more.

“I am thrilled to continue another round of the Pinays Rising Scholarship. It is so inspiring to see the Pinay/x/es who are empowering their communities through activism and art. This Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, I think it’s important to celebrate the womxn in our communities, and one of the ways we can do that is to uplift and provide resources for the next generation,” Ibarra said.

Pinays Rising is accepting donations and sponsors to raise money for 2021 scholarship awardees. Interested donors may visit their website for more information.

“Higher education shouldn’t be a privilege and students shouldn’t have to struggle to attend school. We hope we can encourage our scholars to pursue higher education and for them to know that they belong in these spaces, too,” Ibarra said. – Rappler.com
