In a webinar titled, “JournKnows: Understanding the Philippine Press and its Fundamental Role in Social and Political Contexts,” veteran journalists and media practitioners will tackle the importance of media coverage in human rights and political campaigns; the present challenges faced by the media; and the ethical obligation of the press to fight for press freedom.

The webinar, happening on Saturday, April 10 at 2 pm, will be hosted by the students of the University of Caloocan City (UCC) – Congress Campus from Bachelor of Arts in Communication 2B North, in collaboration with The New Crossroads (North) or TNC of the North, the official student publication of UCC for North Campuses, and MovePH, the civic engagement arm of Rappler.

The overall program aims to bring forth awareness and understanding on the state of Philippine Media under the present political maneuvering of President Duterte, the principles and ethics of media reporting, the roles and responsibilities of media in upholding and protecting human rights, and the influence of media in shaping political consciousness.

Among the topics that will be discussed include “The Competing Visions of the Philippine Press,” “Human Rights Reporting,” and “Mass Media in Democratic Elections.”

Confirmed speakers include veteran journalist Inday Espina-Varona, Bulatlat senior writer and Altermidya correspondent Janess Ann Ellao, and Rappler’s multimedia reporter Rambo Talabong.

The ‘JournKnows’ webinar is a project of UCC (North campus) students. Other media partners include Bulatlat, Altermidya Network, and College Editors Guild of the Philippines.
