The 48th Interscholastic Clinicopathologic Conference will have two parts: a panel discussion in the morning and a clinical case competition in the afternoon

This is a press release from the UP Medical Students’ Society

The University of the Philippines (UP) Medical Students’ Society (MSS) will highlight the importance of critical thinking in clinical decision-making in its 48th Interscholastic Clinicopathologic Conference (ICPC) on Saturday, March 20, bearing the theme Convalescence.

Convalescence means a period of recovery after illness. With this theme, the 48th ICPC hopes to promote critical thinking in handling disease, in order to bring each patient into this convalescent period and eventually, back as a functioning member of our society.

This is the first time that ICPC will be held virtually and will be streamed on the official ICPC Facebook page.

The ICPC will be split into two parts: a morning panel discussion from 9 to 11 am and an afternoon premiere of the clinical case competition from 1 to 5 pm.

The panel discussion will focus on future directions in terms of COVID-19 management and prevention strategies. The online audience can engage with the panelists themselves with their questions via Facebook Livestream.

The morning panel will feature prominent speakers such as:

  • Dr. Nina Gloriani, head of the DOST Vaccine Expert Development Panel
  • Dr. Jonas Del Rosario, the official PGH spokesperson and;
  • Dr. Arthur Dessi Roman, an infectious disease specialist from the Research Institute of Tropical Medicine.

The highlight for the afternoon session is the premiere of the clinical case competition and awarding of the winning schools for the event.

In this competition, different teams are given the same patient case but with the true diagnosis withheld. The teams are judged on how well they can use clinical data to support their diagnosis. Like a case closed at the end of a thriller movie, the true diagnosis is then revealed at the end of the event by a faculty member of the UP-PGH Department of Pathology.

ICPC started its run 48 years ago in 1973 and has been held annually ever since the founding of UP MSS in the same year. The highlight of the event has always been the clinical case contest, which fosters a spirit of healthy competition among various Filipino medical schools.

However, the morning event has evolved over time from a lecture series to a human library, and finally, to a panel discussion this 2021. The number of schools competing has also increased from 10 to 13 in our roster for this year.

You can join the UP MSS on March 20 and get on the #RoadToRecovery.
