MANILA, Philippines – Japanese electronics maker Sharp Corp will begin producing LED TVs in the Philippines, announced a top executive.

Sharp (Philippines) Corporation will begin manufacturing 3 models this October, said company president Takahiro Tanaka at a celebration for Sharp’s 30th anniversary on Friday, September 14.

The company will start with the popular 24-inch units but Tanaka declined to say how many would be produced. He said that the company would continue to import larger LED TVs from neighboring Thailand to the Philippines.

LED TVs use light-emitting diodes instead of standard fluorescent lights to illuminate the screen and are thought to have better picture quality than standard LCD TVs.

Sharp is taking a bet that as incomes rise, more Filipinos will be able to afford high quality TVs.

“We want to be part of the continuous growth of the Philippines by producing locally, with the vision that our employees must grow together with the company in achieving its financial growth in the years to come,” said Tanaka.

Sharp hopes the new LED TVs will help them capture a larger share of the Philippine television market. Tanaka said Sharp only holds 10% of the market but wants to increase this to 40%.

He added that they hope to expand further in the Philippines since their twin-tub washing machine and videoke products are well received in the market and gaining popularity. – Rappler.com
