PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan – The spotlight is on the Philippine mining industry after former environment secretary Gina Lopez shut down several mining sites earlier this year.
Lopez also banned “prospective” open-pit mines, saying that such mining sites damage the environment and pose risks to nearby communities.
In Palawan, however, Nickel Asia Corporation said it is making an effort to show that responsible mining can be done.
