SM brings Hilton's luxury Conrad hotels to Manila
MANILA, Philippines – The SM group of the country's richest man, Henry Sy, and global hospitality company Hilton Worldwide (formerly, Hilton Hotels Corp) have inked an agreement for the management of an upcoming luxury hotel in Manila.
In a statement on Thursday, March 7, SM Hotels and Conventions Corporations (SMHCC), a subsidiary of SM Investment Corporation (SMIC), said the two groups agreed that the Sy-led hotel services firm will manage Conrad Manila, the luxury brand of Hilton Worldwide hotels.
The 350-room hotel is scheduled to open in mid-2015 and will be the first Conrad Hotels and Resorts branded property in the Philippines.
Conrad Manila will be located along Manila Bay front as part of the 42-hectare SM Bay City development, where the 4th largest shopping mall in the world, SM Mall of Asia, is located.
“Today’s announcement illustrates our continued commitment to expand our footprint in the Philippines and is a significant milestone for us as it marks the entry of our luxury brand, Conrad Hotels & Resorts, into this dynamic city,” Martin Rinck, president of Asia Pacific, Hilton Worldwide, said in a statement.
“We are very happy to formalize our partnership with Hilton Worldwide as it combines their expertise of a global, award-winning hospitality company with SM’s strong local market expertise," said Elizabeth Sy, president, SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation.
Sy added that Conrad Manila is part of their strategy to "capitalize on strong demand from both domestic and international business and leisure travellers.”
Located at Seaside Boulevard, Pasay City, Conrad Manila will be 3 kilometers from Ninoy Aquino International Airport, 6 kilometers from Makati Central Business District (CBD) area, and adjacent to the SMX Convention and Exhibition Center.
The 8-storey hotel will incorporate two levels of retail and entertainment facilities on ground level. It will also have a business center, a fitness club, a swimming pool, a spa, a 1,446 square meter ballroom, and other function and meeting spaces.
This deal was announced the same day the World Economic Forum (WEF) 2013 Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index announced in a release that the Philippines is one of the rising stars in international tourism. The Philippines advanced 12 notches in the index.
Conrad Manila is the 5th hotel to be introduced in the Philippines by SMHCC. The other hotels in the company’s portfolio are Radisson Blu in Cebu, Taal Vista Hotel in Tagaytay, and Pico Sands at Hamilo’s Pico de Loro Resort in Nasugbu, Batangas.
Soon to open is Park Inn Hotel in Lanang, Davao which is right beside SM City Lanang. SMHCC is also the leading conventions operator in the country through SMX Convention Center which now has two outlets at the Mall of Asia Complex and Davao, and its Megatrade Halls in SM Megamall and SM City Cebu. - Rappler.com
