MWSS penalizes Maynilad over Las Piñas water shortage
(UPDATED) MWSS orders Maynilad to refund Las Piñas customers who were severely affected by the water service interruption last May

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – The Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) board has penalized Maynilad over the water supply shortage in Las Piñas City last May.

In a statement on Friday, June 28, MWSS said Maynilad failed to comply with its service obligations under the concession agreement, which specifies that it provide water services to its customers for 24 hours every day.

Portions of Barangay Captain Albert Aguilar in Las Piñas City experienced water service interruptions in May. MWSS found that the area had low water pressure for more than 15 days, which “adversely affected the public health or welfare.”

MWSS ordered a P2,500-rebate to consumers who were severely affected. This will be applied to succeeding water bills or statements of account until fully expended.

The MWSS said it would facilitate the implementation of the rebate to all affected customers.

Maynilad said it has yet to receive the official notice on the MWSS decision.

“We will coordinate with our regulators to determine the rationale behind their decision and how they arrived at their computations,” Maynilad said in a statement. – Rappler.com
