MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Long Distance Telecommunications Co. (PLDT) officials said they have prepared for and addressed possible disruptions that their network may face in the upcoming mid-term polls.

The telco networks of PLDT’s units Smart and Sun, as well as rival Globe Telecom, are one of the options in transmitting election results to the servers of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on May 13.

Speaking at PLDT’s first quarter 2013 results press briefing on Tuesday, May 7, PLDT officials said they are prepared to handle the data surge expected, as well as possible brownouts, on election day.

“We are very well prepared,” said PLDT president and CEO Napoleon Nazareno. “Of course there are inherent risks, for example brownouts.”

According to Nazareno, PLDT operates around 6,000 base stations across the country. Each one will be provided with back-up batteries and generators to ensure smooth transmission.

“Even in Mindanao we can deal with an 8-hour power interruption,” added Nazareno.

“In the event of a power failure, the PCOS machine data is not lost,” stressed Ray C. Espinosa, head of the group’s government and regulatory affairs. There would only be a delay in transmission.

PCOS refers to the precinct count optical scan (PCOS) machine, which will be used in the country’s second nationwide automated election. – Rappler.com
