MANILA, Philippines – The 5-month sales of vehicle assemblers belonging to the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines (Campi) and the Truck Manufacturers Association (TMA) grew double digits, thanks to strong consumer spending.

Campi and TMA announced in a statement on Wednesday, June 13, their January to May sales grew 13% to 72,988 units from 59,174 units in the same period of 2012.

In May alone, sales stood at 15,859 units, an 11% increase from 14,262 units in the same month last year, and up 6.5% from 14,888 units in April.

As of May, passenger car sales improved 35.4% year on year to 23,904 units, accounting for a bigger share of 32.75% of total vehicle sales.

Sales of commercial vehicles, on the other hand, went up 18.2% to 49,084 units. Commercial vehicles’ market share went down to 67.25% from 70.16% last year.

Leading all brands was Toyota Motor Philippines, which sold 29,442 units, equivalent to 40% of total sales. Next was Mitsubishi Motor Philippines, with 17,737 units sold or a 24.3% share.
