A unit of A. Brown Co. Inc. signed a contract with government for the construction of a 25-MW hydropower plant that will help boost power supply in Surigao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines – A unit of A. Brown Co. Inc. (ABCI) signed a contract with government for the construction of a hydropower plant that will help boost power supply in Surigao del Sur.

Hydrolink Projects Corp. will build a 25-megawatt hydropower plant in the province that will utilize water from the Carac-an River in Cantillan.

ABCI chairman Walter Brown said the plant would provide the requirements of the Surigao del Sur II Electric Cooperative (Surseco II), which supplies power to 12 municipalities and one city in the province.

Surseco II’s contract with supplier National Power Corp. had been reduced.

“We would like to help them in this undertaking, and as a sign of our full and sincere intentions, we immediately commissioned a hydropower technical team to study the power potentials of the rivers in Surigao,” Brown said.

Hydrolink president and ABCI vice-president for business development Roel Castro added: “We have already identified the most viable strategies for the development. We will now proceed to processing the necessary permits and coordinating with Surigao’s local officials for their support.”

The project is part of ABCI’s plans to provide additional power capacities to electric cooperatives in Mindanao, the company said. – Rappler.com
