MANILA, Philippines — The first half of 2013 saw a decline in the production of motor vehicles in the country and a spike in the assembly of motorcycles and scooters, the ASEAN Automotive Federation (AAF) said Monday, August 5.
Motor vehicle production fell 4.2% to 35,082 units from the 36,632 recorded in the first half of 2012.
AAF said the Philippines bucked the trend in the region; neighbors Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam all registered higher production.
Production of motorcycles and scooters, on the other hand, grew 33% year-on-year to 345,231 units from 259,554. This growth was higher than the growths recorded by Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, according to the AAF.
The Philippines posted a 19% increase in motor vehicle sales to 86,684 units from 72,874 a year ago. Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia also registered growths. Brunei and Singapore were the losers in this area.
Sales of motorcycles and scooters likewise rose 5.6% to 354,393 units from 335,696 in 2012.
The AAF was established in 1976, but ceased operations 7 years later. It was re-established in 1996 to help ASEAN markets increase their share and presence in the global automotive market. – Rappler.com
