MANILA, Philippines — Dairy giant Fonterra assured the public that none of its dairy brands here contain a bacteria that could cause botulism.
Fonterra Philippines said in a statement that its branded consumer products in the country are not affected by the health alert issued by New Zealand where the world’s largest dairy exporter is based.
“All of our consumer branded products in the Philippines are safe for consumption and unaffected by this issue,” said Carlo Mendoza, general manager of Fonterra Brands Philippines.
New Zealand warned international health authorities over the weekend that a whey protein concentrate contaminated by a bacteria causing botulism had been exported to Australia, China, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and Vietnam. The concentrate is used as ingredient for dairy products.
Botulism is a foodborne infection caused by Clostridium botulinum, which can lead to paralysis and even death.
China has banned all New Zealand dairy products.

Fonterra brands in the Philippines include Anchor, Anmum, Anlene, Perfect Italiano and Mainland.
The Philippines is the third largest Asian market, after China and Indonesia, for Fonterra products. It imports most of its dairy requirements from New Zealand.
The Food and Drug Administration has not released any advisory against Fonterra products, said National Dairy Authority Administrator Grace Cenas. – Rappler.com
