Cement manufacturers increase supply due to higher demand from government

MANILA, Philippines – Cement manufacturers said they are ready to meet rising demand from government, which is boosting infrastructure spending.

Ernesto Ordoñez, president of the Cement Manufacturers’ Association of the Philippines (CeMAP), said demand for cement has gone up following the 21% increase in the budget allotted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for infrastructure as well as sustained growth in private sector construction and property investments.

“Our member firms are increasing their capacity to meet the higher demand for cement,” noted Ordoñez.

The government is paving, repairing and rehabilitating roads in the country, and building new ones to enhance connectivity and boost the economy.

DPWH reported on its site that it has paved 81% of national roads. 50% of the roads were paved with cement, and 29%, with asphalt.

Ordoñez said the government prefers to use cement because of its “higher durability, environment-friendly characteristics, and overall cost advantage over the long run versus asphalt.”

He said cement also has greater resistance to rain and flooding.

Ordoñez said they are talking to local government units outside DPWH’s control about the advantages of using concrete. – Rappler.com
