Filipinos mainly use their smartphones for chatting, social networking and entertainment activities like games, according to a Nielsen report

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino mobile consumers were on their smartphones for an average of 171 minutes per day in June, a study by global market research firm Nielsen showed.

That is still less than the average time logged by users in other developing countries in the region, led by Malaysia (249 minutes), Thailand (209 minutes) and Indonesia (196 minutes).

“In Southeast Asia alone, smartphone owners spent on average more than 3 hours per day on their smartphones in June 2013,” Nielsen said in its report, “Decoding the Asian Mobile Consumer.”

Consumers used their smartphones mainly for chatting, social networking, entertainment activities like games, and multimedia.

Filipinos spent 45 active minutes on communication services, 41 minutes on apps and 50 minutes on entertainment activities.

“Despite smartphone penetration having not yet reached 100%, apps usage is burgeoning,” said Sagar Phadke, director of Nielsen’s Telecom and Technology Practice in Southeast Asia, North Asia and Pacific.

One in 5 smartphone owners worldwide or 1.2 billion were app users.

Some of Asia Pacific’s more developed nations already surpassed countries in the US and Europe in smartphone penetration.

Tied at the top were Hong Kong and Singapore (87%), followed by Malaysia (80%), Australia (75%) China (71%), Thailand (49%), Indonesia (23%), India (18%) and the Philippines (15%). US recorded 60%, while rates of UK, France and Germany were 72%, 64% and 62%, respectively.
