MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) will decide on the location of the common station for the Light and Metro rail transits before November 11, when the socal and economic development planning board is scheduled to meet.

Transportation secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya told reporters that DOTC will likely recommend Trinoma Mall as the location of the common station.

He explained that the agency is still studying whether a turn-back system – an area where trains will maneuver to change directions – can be constructed in front of Trinoma without hurting operations.

Abaya stressed DOTC is sure to recommend Trinoma if the turn-back system can be built in front of the mall without glitches.

“We want to make sure that technically, we could build a turn-back without hurting operations. If that can be done, then we’ll recommend Trinoma,” he noted.

The DOTC initially wanted to build the common station, which will connect the LRT and MRT lines, in front of SM North Edsa Annex.

Why they prefer Trinoma

Trinoma is the preferred location because of cost and technical considerations, according to Abaya.

Abaya said placing the common station in front of SM North will cause “urban blight.”

“It’s urban blight. The structure is big and placing it in front of SM may cause darkness at EDSA,” he added.

The common station for LRT and MRT is one of the matters that will be discussed by the National Economic and Development Authority board when it meets on November 11. The board is chaired by President Benigno Aquino III.

The common station will connect 3 rail systems:

  • Light Rail Transit Line 1, which runs from Baclaran in Pasay City to Roosevelt in Quezon City,
  • Metro Rail Transit Line 3
  • the proposed MRT Line 7, which will cover Caloocan City, Lagro and Fairview, Novaliches, Batasan, Diliman, Philcoa, then the corner of Edsa and North Avenue
