Meralco says tight supply conditions due to the shutdown of some power plants resulted in the increase in rates

MANILA, Philippines – Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said customers will pay higher electricity bills this month as power rates go up by P1.24 kilowatt per hour (kWh).
The power distributor said customers using 200 kWh monthly will pay about P247 more, and charges will be higher for those who consume more.
The upward adjustment is due to higher pass-through charges, broken down as follows:
- generation charge – up P0.98/kWh
- transmission charge – up P0.70/per kWh
- taxes – up P0.80/kWh
- other bill components, including system loss charge – up by P0.11/kWh
Meralco said tight supply conditions due to the maintenance shutdown of some large power plants forced it to source power from the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM). WESM rates were up P8.10 per kWh.
The company stressed that it does not earn from pass-through charges as payments for these go directly to power suppliers. – Rappler.com
