MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) announced Thursday, December 5, that it will conduct public consultations on the proposed fare hike for the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) line 3 and Light Rail Transit (LRT) lines 1 and 2 starting December 12.

According to DOTC Undersecretary for Operations Eduardo Oban Jr., the talks on December 12 will begin at 2 pm at the LRT 2 Depot Cafeteria along Marcos Highway in Santolan, Pasig City.

He said, “Anybody whose interest is at stake or who wishes to convey or express his views on the matter is most welcome.”

Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya said the consultations may take about two to three days then, “we will decide after that.”

The amount of the fare hike and the date of implementation will be discussed.

In June, the Light Rail Transit Authority approved a fare increase of P10 for the three railway systems in Metro Manila, but this was met with strong opposition from militant and consumer groups.

The increase, which was also endorsed by President Benigno Aquino III in his 4th State of the Nation Address, was eyed to be implemented on staggered basis: P5 this year, and another P5 next year.

If finally imposed, the increase will be the first in a decade.

Aquino said the fare hike is needed to cut government subsidies for the train lines.

The current fare at MRT, which runs along EDSA from Taft Avenue in Pasay City to North Avenue in Quezon City, is at a maximum of P15 per passenger.

Passengers taking LRT 1 (from Baclaran in Parañaque City to Balintawak in Quezon City) are charged up to P20, while those riding LRT 2 (from Recto in Manila to Santolan in Pasig) are charged up to P15. – Rappler.com
