An MGB-NBI team raids a mining plant of Bo Hai Top Mining in Labo, Camarines Norte for operating without a permit

MANILA, Philippines – The environment department’s Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) raided a mining plant of Bo Hai Top Mining in Labo, Camarines Norte for operating without a permit.

MGB Director Leo Jasareno announced that a team from his agency and the National Bureau of Investigation raided the mine and processing plant in Barangays (Villages) Napaod and Benit.

In a statement on Sunday, February 9, Jasareno said the team arrested 14 Chinese miners, and seized 500 tons of copper, gold and iron concentrate worth $25,000 and 6 backhoes.

“The raid was done as part of the national campaign to stop illegal mining,” he said.

Jasareno said the MGB will issue an order to dismantle the plant on Monday.

The MGB will also sue officials of Bo Hai Top Mining for violating the Mining Act and environmental laws for operating without an environmental clearance.

The bureau said illegal mining remains prevalent, and became an “urgent concern.”

MGB deployed 8 agents under the NBI’s environmental protection division to arrest illegal miners who continue operating despite orders against them.

The agency tasked the agents to file cases against the operators, and to stop the illegal transport of minerals from illegal mining operations. – Rappler.com
