The trade department said the food processing industry in Cagayan de Oro, and the construction and equipment companies in Iligan suffered from 'Sendong' the most

MANILA, Philippines – Typhoon damage to small and medium enterprises (SME) in northern Mindanao last December 2011 was estimated to have breached P100 million, according to the trade department.

Tropical storm Sendong (international codename Washi) wrought havoc to the port cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City in the dead of the night on December 16, 2011, as heavy rainfall swelled narrow rivers and brought logs down from the elevated areas.

Linda Boniao, assistant director of the Department of Trade and Industries’ Region 10 office said ‘Sendong’ hit the food processing industry in Cagayan de Oro City the most.

The typhoon completely destroyed several factory plants, equipment and facilities of major food processors in the city, which hosts several commercial businesses that take advantage of the natural resources, such as agricultural and mineral products, that are abundant in neighboring areas.

Among those hardly hit are Pines TGO Foods and Darling Foods, producers of processed meat such as ham, hotdog, and sausage.

The SMEs in Iligan City, on the other hand, suffered from flood waters that swept away vehicles and heavy equipment of construction companies to the sea, Bonia said.

Iligan, which is located near the main hydropower source in Mindanao, hosts most of the industrial businesses in the area.

The trade department said these damages are still partial as they have yet to complete the assessment of all the affected SMEs in the region.

Previously, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that infrastructure and agricultural damages from ‘Sendong’ reached almost P1 billion.

These figure includes damaged bridges, roads, houses, and schools.  – Rappler.com
