DAVAO CITY, Philippines - The Duterte family, a known ally of President Aquino, is ready to defy the President's new executive order to keep this city mining-free.
Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said she will continue to ban mining to protect Davao from its alleged harmful effects.
"With regard to metal mining, including gold, nickel and copper, it's an absolute no in Davao City," she said.
Aquino released on July 9 EO 79 spelling out his administration's policy on mining.
Among others, the EO stressed the need to raise government's share in mining revenues, and upheld the primacy of national laws over local ordinances.
Duterte's father and the Davao City's vice mayor, Rodrigo, agreed with Aquino on the primacy of national laws.
However, he said the EO "will not work" in their city.
The Dutertes are banking on a bill filed in Congress that seeks to declare the city a mining-free zone. Authored by Davao City 3rd District Rep Isidro Ungab, the bill is currently on its 2nd reading in the House.
Aside from Davao City, local governments in different provinces such as Capiz, Marinduque, Palawan, Romblon, Negros Occidental, Eastern Samar, South Cotabato and Zamboanga del Norte passed ordinances banning mining operations in their areas. - Rappler.com
