Energy chief: It's 'my failure'

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - Energy Secretary Jose Rene Almendras said during the Mindanao Power Summit in Davao Friday, April 13, that he is assuming responsibility for the power problem in Mindanao.

He also asserted that President Aquino must not be blamed for the projected power deficiency in the region.

“We assume the responsibility that we have failed. That is my failure, not the President's,” Almendras said.

Almendras said that the problem in Mindanao must be addressed immediately.

He added that the Department of Energy is currently working on short-term and long-term solutions to address the issue.

However, Almendras declared that there are economic, technical, social and legal issues that must be considered, making available solutions more complex.

National Power Corp President Froilan Tampinco said on Thursday, April 12, that there is a projected power generation deficiency in Mindanao throughout the year except in December.

Tampinco said that based on the current capacity of the power sources in Mindanao, the entire island will be experiencing a 77-megawatt shortage in April 2012.

He also warned about a deficency of 88MW in May, 47MW in June, 25MW in July, 59MW in August, 55MW in September, 77MW in October and 33MW in November. - Rappler.com
